Wed, 23 Apr 2014 11:00:00 GMT Wardrums in Myanmar's Wa hills
The chief of Myanmar's armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, took to the hills near the Chinese border this month with a message for the United Wa State Army, the country's largest insurgent group, to sign a national ceasefire agreement or face the consequences as the only ethnic faction holding out against peace. Military action could prove counterproductive, but national pride and angst over Chinese influence appear to be leading the charge. - Anthony Davis (Apr 23, '14)

Originally posted at TomDispatch. Sometimes you really do need a map if you want to know where you are. In 2008, the ACLU issued just such a map of this country and it’s like nothing ever seen before. Titled “the Constitution-Free Zone of the United States,” it traces our country’s borders. Maybe you’re already tuning […]

Even more threatening to Israel these days than the sporadic violence on its borders from the civil war in Syria or Islamist opposition to the military coup in neighboring Egypt is the peaceful and growing boycott, divestment, sanctions (BDS) movement in the West and in Palestine against Israeli companies and institutions, especially those that have […]

Oh, the burden of empire! It weighs so heavily on John Kerry’s shoulders: "Secretary of State John Kerry attested Tuesday to the massively complex challenges Washington faces in Ukraine, Russia, Iran and the Middle East, declaring ‘it was easier’ during the Cold War. "In a candid moment during a State Department speech, the top US […]

With Vladimir Putin having bloodlessly annexed Crimea and hinting that his army might cross the border to protect the Russians of East Ukraine, Washington is abuzz with talk of dispatching U.S. troops to Eastern Europe. But unless we have lost our minds, we are not going to fight Russia over territory no president ever regarded […]

 Mon, 21 Apr 2014 06:00:19 +0000 Is There Hope?
This Easter day, 2014, is fraught with meaning, at least for me. This is a holiday of hope, and I’m wondering: is there any? I have to admit, at times, that pessimism overcomes me. The way lies take hold, and persist, does not bode well for the triumph of truth. Take, for example, the recent […]

A few weeks ago we were told in the West that people occupying government buildings in Ukraine was a very good thing. These people, we were told by our political leaders and elite media commentators, were pro-democracy protestors.
